Preparatory course for the Certificate in Cervical Cytology - Thin Prep only
This three-day course is exclusively designed for individuals preparing to undertake the NHSCSP Examination in
Cervical Cytology. The course contains lectures and a mock examination session designed to demonstrate both the
format of the examination and the skills and attributes required for its successful completion. The course will
cover specific topics selected from the NHSCSP Training Log and will include discussion and feedback on examination
technique and performance.

Introductory Course in Gynaecological Cytology - Thin Prep only
This four-week course is designed as an introduction to cervical cytology and the art of screening. The syllabus
will follow that approved by the NHSCSP and will
contain a minimum of 80 hours microscopy time.
Week One - will concentrate almost exclusively on the normal cervical sample and commonly encountered infections.
Week Two - will introduce the concept and morphological appearance of squamous cervical abnormalities.
Week Three - will describe and demonstrate adenocarcinoma of the female genital tract and, together with Week Four,
will focus on quality issues within the NHSCSP.
Course Tutors will be Mrs Helen Burrell, Mrs Helen Hoskins and Mr Mike Rowell. The progress of course participants
will be monitored at a one-week follow-up course which will be provided approximately one year later.

Non-gynaecological Cytology for Technical Staff
This three-day course is designed for staff involved in the preparation and assessment of non-gynaecological
material. The topics covered will include important aspects of preparation and health and safety, as well as
lectures and workshops on commonly encountered non-gynaecological specimens. These will include, amongst others,
urine, sputum, serous fluids and FNA of breast and lymph nodes. The role of immunocytochemistry in aiding diagnosis
will also be considered.

Update in Gynaecological Cytology (ThinPrep
only)
This 3-day refresher course in gynaecological cytology provides an opportunity for qualified staff to update their
knowledge of the subject. Informal discussion is encouraged and the topics covered include such perennial problems
such as borderline changes and adenocarcinoma. Much of the programme will involve self assessment sessions and peer
group review. Quality assurance proficiency testing and the role of new technologies will also be considered.

Cervical
Sample Taker Training
As part of ongoing quality measures within the cervical screening
programme, the Cytology Training Centre is pleased to offer
a cervical sample taker training course. This course has been
approved by the South & West Regional Cervical Screening Quality
Assurance Reference Centre and provides a two-day theoretical
insight into the cervical screening programme, together with
practical instruction and support in the taking of cervical
samples. Course participants will be expected to achieve a minimum
of twenty-five good quality samples within six months of the course.
Members will also be invited to attend a half-day update every
three years.
Course Tutors: Mrs Marylin Butt, Nurse Professional Lead, Mrs Helen Burrell and
Mrs Helen Hoskins. Close liaison with the cytology laboratory is provided in order to monitor an individual's
progress on an ongoing basis.
